The public is invited to the workshop that will take place on Jan. 31, 2008 at the Mountain Laurel Resort, Route 940 West, White Haven, Pa., from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and will be facilitated by the Wildlands Conservancy. To read the full press release click here. If you are a paddler with an interest in boating releases on the Lehigh River you may want to attend this important meeting. For further information, please visit the website: PUBLIC ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN RECREATIONAL TRAILS PLANTen years ago the NJ Trails Council published overall recommendations for Trails in New Jersey. It languished until recently, when it became active again. You can find a PDF of that plan on the website below. There had been some changes over the years, but it's still the best description of their plans. Note that the concept of NJ Trails includes water and paddling trails; that is why we should be paying attention to this -- and they want our input. Currently, NJDOT is a principal investor in developing this updated plan and their emphasis will be on Bicycle transportation. We need to maintain the need for hiking and paddling trails. The initial Open houses have been held, but the Visioning Workshops are to be held in October, and you can participate in a trail-user survey on their website. DETAILSThe Pegasus High Voltage DC Line Project has once again come to the forefront. They have been doing a lot of their work behind the scenes, coming up only to wreak their work. This time it's far worse. Last time around it was to be a buried cable along the RR right of way. Now this same cable is to be hung from pylons between Utica and Rockland County. These pylons may be as high as 200 tall. Since rights of way for such use must be 2 1/2 as wide as high, this is a horrible footprint for the portion going along the Upper Delaware Wild & Scenic River. Note that this is the ENTIRE W&S river up there. This is now authorized by the Emergency Energy & Power legislation passed last August. It does give authority to this group (and others) to supersede any protections afforded by Wild & Scenic river designations. This has to be stopped.
